Volunteering

What’s great about volunteering at the sale?

There are so many fantastic things about volunteering, but here’s a few headlines to get you started.

  • Snag a bargain: Volunteers get first dibs on over 6,000 pre-loved items before the sale opens!
  • Help a great cause: We raise money for incredible local children’s charities.
  • Meet awesome people: Connect with other Edinburgh parents and make new friends.
  • Find a role that suits you: From the till to setting up tables, there’s a job for everyone.
  • Feel good! You’ll be helping the environment and supporting your community.

Basically, it’s a fun and rewarding way to spend your time while making a real difference!

Where can I sign up?

Our sign-up form can be found here

What kind of tasks do the volunteers at the Polwarth Pre-Loved Sale do?

All sorts! We have tasks for every skill and level of mobility. No experience is required.

Some examples include

  • Setting out the tables
  • Keeping everything tidy
  • Pricing and putting out donations
  • Running the tills
  • Running the cafe
  • Welcoming our customers at the door
  • Organising items for sellers to collect

If you have any questions please feel free to drop us an email.

Can I volunteer with a friend?

Yes! There is a section on the form where you can fill in the name of any friends you’d like to work with. We’ll do our best to accommmodate these requests.

Do I get any say in the tasks I am assigned?

We’ll do what we can. There is a section on the form where you can fill in preferences. We’ll assign tasks to match preferences where possible, but sometimes we are not able to accomodate every wish. If you are allocated a job on the day that you are uncomfortable with please grab a committee member and we’ll endeavour to switch things up.

Can I bring a child with me to volunteer?

Yes you can. As a general rule we would suggest not bringing children under 10, but we trust that you know your own child best in terms of what they are capable of.

We will ask you to take full responsibility for any children that you bring to volunteer, and you’ll have to sign to confirm you accept this.

Do you accept home baking?

Yes, we love home bakes!

Our cafe features delicious treats contributed by our wonderful volunteers, sellers, and customers.

If you’d like to contribute, you can drop off your baked goods on Friday between 3-8 PM and on Saturday morning.

To help us ensure our sales are as accessible as possible, please include a note with your baking listing the ingredients used. We won’t be able to sell anything received without this.

We will of course make it clear that we cannot guarantee that any baked goods are completely free from allergens, please don’t let this requirement deter you from contributing.

All proceeds from our cafe sales go directly to the charity we are supporting during that event. Thank you for your support!

What about health and safety?

The health and safety of our volunteers is of critical importance to us. To this end, we complete risk assessments for all tasks and will share relevant information with volunteers in advance of the sale.

You’ll be asked to sign to confirm that you have read and understood this on behalf of yourself and any children you have accompanying you.

There is nothing too arduous, it’s mostly common sense but it is required for your safety, as well as to comply with our insurance requirements. Please feel free to ask any questions and always challenge anything you are uncomfortable with.
